Are you a Multipotentialite Human?

February 04, 2018

While we are still fresh in the new year, I would still very much talk about how maybe you can improve yourself this year.

Sometime last year at the drop point of my life, I come across a TedX Talk by Emilie Wapnick. In all honesty, I haven't really googled her before writing this blog. Haha. But her speech in the video made me 100x more better and self-accepting, knowing that "Why some of us don't have one true calling." (That was the title of her talk).

multipotentialite

Multipotentialite, she calls it. And what is it? Why do I love that word so much that I even placed it as my Instagram bio for some time? As Emilie mentioned, multipotentialite is for people who doesn't have one specific talent or skills, but they've acquired so much more.

I've always wondered why I never have one skill that I was good at. I was always learning something new; things I like. Whether it was dancing, traveling, writing, digital media, graphic design and animation even marketing. It was so many things at the same time. Sometimes I wish I could only focus in one thing and make that the skill of my life. My dad always told his kids that we should be so good at something that people will come look for us for help and that way we can make money from our skills.

At that time, I was always so horrified that I don't have one really good skill. I was worried that there might be something wrong with me and why can't I have commitment to one thing. I blamed myself that I am not a focused person. That I wasn't able to be so good at one thing and one thing only. I was always trying something, here and there and the result would always just be average! Unlike other people, my friends, family who have one amazing skill like graphic design, illustrating or public relations, and became so professional that people look for them for their skills. I was so envious.

Then Emilie Wapnick changed all of that mindset. This talk was like a refreshing light. All of the skills -- soft and hard skills that I've acquired all of my life due to my curiosity or that I did lovingly was actually something I should be proud of. Because not only that I've gained so much more knowledge than most people, I learned that it was ok to be have options and many favorites, even if it turns out average. It was better to be knowledgable and average at a lot of things than to have one skill only for the rest of your life. Can you imagine how boring life would be if that happens?

And I know it might be the whole millenials era thing, where kids these days just want to follow their passion and dreams. And it is totally humane to want so much and never feel content. But when you've finally accepted who you are and what your skills are, it was actually easier to "sell" yourself to people. The more people will need your skills! Though one thing that you should never forget: is to keep learning. Learn and improve your skills everyday so that you will become the best version of yourself and no longer need to feel "average". Remember to feel enough and be grateful, but never settle for less.
So, are you a multipotentialite human after all?
